Before You Switch Gaming PCs: A Save-File and Cloud-Sync Checklist

Before You Switch Gaming PCs: A Save-File and Cloud-Sync Checklist

A low-risk plan for moving game saves, cloud data, settings, screenshots and mod records to a new gaming PC.

A cloud icon is not a complete migration plan: game saves, configuration files, screenshots and mods may live in different places and follow different sync rules.

Steam Cloud can copy configured game files between computers, but support and file coverage are controlled per game. Other launchers and games use their own systems. The safe method treats every important game as a separate migration record, keeps the old PC unchanged and proves a restore before any deletion.

Inventory progress before copying

List the games whose progress matters, the launcher and account used, the last played date and whether cloud sync is visibly enabled. Launch each game on the old computer, close it normally and wait for the launcher to finish synchronising. Record a recognisable save detail such as play time, chapter or manual-save name without publishing private account information.

Make an independent local copy

Cloud sync protects convenience, not every migration mistake. Locate the documented save folder for that specific game or use its supported export. Copy it to a separate drive or trusted backup location while the game is closed. Preserve folder structure and include a note about game version, downloadable content and launcher. Do not assume screenshots, control layouts or mods share the save directory.

Prevent the first-launch conflict

Install the launcher and game on the new PC, sign into the intended account and check sync status before opening the game. If a conflict dialog offers local and cloud versions, compare timestamps and known save details instead of automatically choosing the newest label. Keep both copies until the correct progress loads and a new test save can be created.

Treat mods and settings as a separate project

A save may depend on a mod version or additional content. Export the mod list, load order and configuration rather than copying unknown executable files wholesale. Reinstall mods from trusted sources and verify compatibility with the current game version. Graphics settings should often be rebuilt for the new hardware rather than transferred blindly.

What may need its own backup

Safe cutover order

  1. Finish sync on the old PC.
  2. Create a second independent copy.
  3. Install and inspect the new system before first launch.
  4. Resolve conflicts using evidence, not guesswork.
  5. Keep the old machine untouched until several restores succeed.

The migration is complete only when the new PC can load the intended save and the backup can be located independently. Until then, the old drive is evidence—not spare storage to wipe.
